HISTORIC OVERVIEW

JUNE 30/2024

WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE?

Radio Suid Afrika/Radio South Africa is an independent online internet radio station. Radio Suid Afrika/ Radio South Africa followed in the shoes of Springbok Radio. The latter, due to stiff competition from television, despite the late arrival of the medium in 1976, saw Springbok Radio's urban listenership sharply decline and it lost all listeners in rural areas with the handing over of its shortwave frequencies to Radio 5. Springbok Radio ceased broadcasting on 31 December 1985.

   THE DEATH OF SPRINGBOK RADIO

Springbok Radio was replaced by a combination of new SABC stations, including Radio South Africa (now SAfm), Radio Suid Afrika (now RSG), and Radio 2000, along with new regional stations. At midnight on December 31, 1985, these stations took to the air, replacing the original Springbok Radio.

                   THE NEWCOMER

Radio Sonder Grense (RSG), the Afrikaans radio station, took on its current name in 1996 after the SABC (South African Broadcasting Corporation) restructured its radio services. Before this, the station was known as the "Afrikaanse Diens van die SAUK" (Afrikaans Service of the SABC) and later as "Radio Suid-Afrika". The restructuring involved dropping the specific language name from the station names, leading to RSG's current identity.

                 RE-BIRTH OF RSA

In 1996, according to popular belief, an individual saw the opportunity to claim and register the IP address as it was dormant and abandoned. This man had a vision for online radio, as the internet  was developing.

The rest is history.
